Stream Replicator
Socket Station is a software "stream replicator"
that allows multiple telnet users or software
processes to connect to a single socket stream.
Socket Station can optionally be used as a middle-man for
Augur
connections so that other applications can
share the raw data collected.
A source output stream can be
replicated for any number of listeners.
Additionally, one connection can
allocate full two-way access to the source port,
while existing listeners
eavesdrop on the communication.
Mediator
Socket Station can mediate several protocols, including
SNMP Traps, log files, TCP/UDP sockets, etc.
Socket Station extends access to a data stream
by alleviating physical port limitations,
and offloading processing resources on the source device.
In the case of a software source,
Socket Station can distribute the I/O load
off the software host onto a different host resource.
Usually the Socket Station is installed on a subnet
close to the intended listeners in order
to conserve network resources by eliminating the
need to drag redundant data across WAN segments.
